The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recorded over 2,000 human rights abuses and violations in Kwara this year.

The state coordinator, of the Commission, Barrister Jumoke Olaoye stated this while speaking at the Biennial Convention of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Kwara chapter, held in Ilorin.

She listed child abandonment and wife battering as the most prevalent human rights abuses recorded in the state.

Olaoye said that an increase in awareness of the activities of the commission made people voice out violations against their rights.

She explained that the commission has adopted mediation to reduce the cases of human rights abuses to the minimum.

The coordinator noted that the commission also collaborates with traditional institutions and other stakeholders to ensure the sustenance of cases resolved.

In his keynote address, the Director-General Michael  Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Comrade Issa Aremu commended members of the CDHR for their selfless struggle to protect the rights of the citizens.

He urged them to combine rights with responsibilities to make it sustainable.

In his remarks, the National Vice-Chairman of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, Comrade Ade Ikuesan advised the citizens to seek knowledge and know their rights.

He urged the committee members not to close their eyes to any form of human rights Violations.

In his speech, CDHR Chairman in Kwara, Comrade Afolabi Lukman said the committee will collaborate with all relevant government agencies to

defend and uphold the rights of the people in the state.
